CREATE for BioZone: Data Visualization With Python Workshop (Instructor: Margot Lautens, UT Coders, Donnelly CCBR)

Dear BioZoners,

Data visualization tools and techniques enhance science communication in today’s fast-changing and information-rich world. The CREATE for BioZone and Data Visualization Working Group will host a free virtual workshop on Data Visualization With Python on November 24 and November 26. All BioZone members including students, postdocs, staff and principal investigators interested in using Python for data visualization in research are encouraged to participate. Please mark your calendar and register below.

About This Event

A two-day virtual workshop that provides an entry point to use Python for data analysis and visualization in research. Day 1 will start with a short lecture on reproducibility and data integrity in data science and cover packages for making that process easier. Then we will move on to a code along portion as we build understanding of some of the core packages for analyzing data in Python with NumPypandas and Biopython as well as how to combine them. Day 2 will begin with an introduction to using statistics for data analysis in Python including linear and non-linear regression followed by visualizing data in Python with matplotlib and seaborn. Day 2 will conclude with a panel discussion (and Q&A) with the instructor and the code along helpers about how they use Python in their work. Your instructor will be Margot Lautens from UT Coders and Donnelly CCBR.

About Margot Lautens

Margot is a PhD student from the Fraser Lab at Donnelly CCBR. Margot is interested in characterizing alternative metabolic pathways in C. elegans to find potential drug targets in parasitic worms. Margot’s work brings together a novel imaging assay with metabolomics and has developed several data analysis pipelines in Python and R. Margot has been an instructor and executive member at UofT Coders since 2018.

This is a beginner to intermediate level Python workshop (no prior experience is required, but we recommend knowing some basic commands), installation instructions will be provided in the next week. If you are a new Python look out for some introduction to Python resources that we will be sharing shortly to help get you acquainted before the workshop.

We look forward to your participation!
