NSERC CREATE Techno-Economic Analysis Primer Workshop

The first workshop hosted by the CREATE for BioZone program on November 12, 2019 was a success. The workshop was attended by 75 participants including 4 CREATE trainees along with 43 other Highly Qualified Personnel (students and post-doctoral fellows). Allison Simmonds from Savant Technical Consulting and a panel of industry experts from EcoSynthetix, Fortress Advanced Bioproducts, IGPC and Canfor Pulp gave an insightful overview of TEA techniques and their biotechnology applications, covering topics that included:

  • Process design fundamentals
  • Lab data for TEA and scale-up
  • Economic analysis tools for talking to industry
  • Estimating product price and feedstock costs
  • Cap-Ex, Op-Ex and project financing
  • Technology commercialization
  • From idea to innovation: industry perspectives
  • Pricing and marketing lessons learned: industry perspective

Presentations were followed by an engaging roundtable discussion with industry partners.
